The Career Services & Internships Office welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with faculty and staff in a variety of ways to help students and alumni meet their career goals. Handshake:  BSU’s online recruiting system where employers post jobs and internships, career events, register for job fairs and interact with students. Faculty can learn about current job openings, internship opportunities, employer events, job fairs, and career-related resources available to their students.

All faculty and staff have a student account created for them which you can access with Single Sign-On at the Handshake log-in page.  If off campus or choosing to use the Handshake mobile app (available in Google and Apple stores), your username is your full BSU email address and the corresponding password.  If you have any questions or trouble logging-in, please feel free to call the office at: 508-531-1328.  ​​​​​​​​​​​ 

Interested in having Career Services & Internships present an interactive workshop for your class, organizations, residence hall, program, or event?  A brief description of each of the workshops is listed below.  We are now presenting in-person or virtual workshops.

Please complete and submit a Workshop Request Form to schedule a workshop for your group. Workshops are 50 minutes in length.

  • Please allow two weeks advance notice when selecting your program date
  • A minimum of 10 participants is requested
  • Workshops may be scheduled Monday – Thursday 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

  • Choosing a Major – Learn about yourself and how to research a major and careers.
  • Cover Letter – Learn how write an effective cover letter that showcases your skills and talents to an employer.
  • Effective Interviewing – Are you ready to sell yourself in an interview? Learn about the interviewing process, commonly asked questions, and tips to help you interview with confidence.
  • Graduate School Planning – Learn how to research schools and navigate the admissions process including test preparation, writing your essay, and more.
  • How to Work a Job Fair – Learn the tips and tricks of navigating a career fair.
  • Informational Interviewing and LinkedIn – Learn how to network through informational interviews with alumni and professionals in your career field.
  • Internships – Learn how students can participate in internships while at BSU.  Credit, funding, and the internship search process will be discussed.
  • Intro to Career Services & Internships Office – Learn about Career Services & Internships resources, programs, events, and other student supports.
  • Job Search – Learn how to organize your job search including networking, job search engines, and the tools needed for a successful search.
  • Resume Writing – Learn how to sell your experience and qualifications to potential employers. Learn resume guidelines to help jump start your career.

Intro to Career Services and Internships – The advisor will provide a broad overview of our resources including appointment types, events, programs, and online tools such as FOCUS, Handshake, and What Can I Do With This Major?

Choosing A Major – The advisor will help the student conduct self-assessment, explore majors and careers, and narrow down their options for choosing a major.

Career Counseling – The advisor will help the student understand what career options are available to them based on their major as well as their values, interests, personality, and skills using a variety of tools and resources.

Resume/Cover Letter – The advisor will critique the student’s draft of a resume or cover letter for content, formatting, spelling, and grammar while teaching the student to align the resume or cover letter to industry standards.

Internship Advising – The advisor will discuss the internship process at BSU, how to search for an internship, set a realistic timeline, outline action steps, and highlight online resources including internship search sites. Funding opportunities and academic credit will also be discussed.

International Internships – The advisor will discuss how to research organizations that offer international internship experiences by placing students in an internship abroad, or in major cities across the U.S., during the summer. 

The Washington Center Program – Spend a semester in Washington, DC!  During this appointment, we will explain the options available, talk through the application process, and discuss how to fund the experience.

Semester in the City Program – Gain experience through an internship in Boston where you can make a difference in the world and earn a full semester of college credit while building skills to solve humanity’s toughest challenges. Learn more about eligibility for the program, the application process, and how to fund the experience.

Hack.Diversity Program – Learn about this nine-month fellowship for Black and Latinx students interested in tech that provides technical training and a paid summer internship in the Boston area within software engineering, data analytics, or mechanical engineering.

Networking – The advisor will discuss how to develop and maintain a professional network using a variety of methods including LinkedIn and informational interviewing.

LinkedIn Profile Review – The advisor will review the student’s LinkedIn profile for content and help them understand all of the options for adding information and experiences to complete their profile. 

Effective Interviewing – The advisor will talk about the do’s and don’ts of interviewing, employer expectations, professional dress, commonly asked questions, and follow-up.

Practice Interview – The advisor will conduct a “real” interview and offer feedback. The student is required to submit an internship or job description of interest and a resume to the advisor in advance. Interview attire can be critiqued as well but is not required.  *It is recommended that the students complete an Effective Interviewing appointment prior to a mock interview if possible.*

Job Search – The advisor will discuss how to organize a job search, set a realistic timeline, outline action steps, and highlight online resources including job search sites. 

Grad School Advising – The advisor will discuss the graduate school timeline, application process, and how to search for graduate programs.

At the start of the fall and spring semesters, Career Services & Internships Office staff make brief 5 minute visits at the start of classes to talk about the services, programs and events we have for the upcoming semester. Be sure your students know all the important resources we can provide them for career success. What Can I Do With This Major? – Learn about typical career paths and types of employers that hire people with each major, as well as strategies to make you a more marketable candidate.

This tool, located throughout our website, allows you to research all major career paths to gain information on the field, salary, job outlook, top employers, skills in demand and more. LinkedIn Alumni Tool  – Talk to BSU alumni to learn about career paths of interest. Check out the LinkedIn & Informational Interviewing Guide for sample LinkedIn messages as well as sample questions that you may want to ask if you schedule an informational interview with a BSU alum.

Big Interview is an online mock interview system allowing BSU students to practice and prepare for your next job interview. There are hundreds of interview sets and questions covering a variety of industry and interview types. The system uses AI technology to track your eye contact, rate of speech and a variety of other factors to help you improve your skill set. As you complete interview sets, you can track your improvement and progress.

There are a variety of ways that students can gain experience on campus through research, volunteerism, study abroad and more. Our office shares resources with students on gaining internship experience in a variety of ways from semester based credited internships, virtual internships, micro-internships and projects, semesters in DC and more! Each year the Career Services & Internships Office conducts a first destination survey of recent graduates 6 months after graduation to learn more about their post-BSU plans including employment, continuing education and more. The CUBEs initiative brings together a team of faculty to explore ways to reinforce career readiness through curriculum. CUBEs projects will help students better prepare for their future careers.

Although CUBEs collaboration focuses on capstone/research projects embedded in BSU’s course design, we also welcome other opportunities to collaborate with employers, such as guest speakers, facility tours, networking events, job shadowing, and internships.
