Career Advice for First Year College Students

Hey First Year students! We are here to support you! Check out these five quick steps to jump-start your career at BSU and beyond.

  1. Update your Handshake information: Handshake is BSU’s student job portal featuring hundreds of internship and job opportunities at organizations across the country. Handshake is also a tool you can use to schedule appointments with career advisors, upload your career documents such as resumes and cover letters, and build a profile based on your career interests. Note that your account is already set up; all you need to do is go to https://bridgew.joinhandshake.com/ Click on Bridgewater State University Login, and type in your BSU email address and password.
  • Utilize Focus2 to explore your career interestsFocus2 is BSU’s online career and education planning system; it allows students to choose majors and careers compatible with their career interests. Take a quick survey and find out what courses and programs are best suited for your career needs! Access Focus2 at https://www.focus2career.com/Portal/Login.cfm?SID=479 . For first time users, you can set up the account using the access code, Bridgew.
  • Update your resume and schedule an appointment with a career advisor: Schedule a career advisement session, get your resume or cover letter reviewed, practice a mock interview, or ask any career-related questions.  To schedule an appointment, first log onto Handshake, click on Career Center, then appointments, and finally search for availability. We also host drop-in sessions Monday through Thursday from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. Join us for a quick sessions to meet with a staff member.
  • Attend Events: Events and career programs are a great way to meet with potential recruiters, introduce yourself to employers, and build your network. For an updated list of upcoming programs and information sessions, log onto Handshake and click on events.
  • Apply for internships: When you feel ready, check out any of the hundreds of internships listed on Handshake. Here are examples of career opportunities for first-year students.
