Most people can picture a “Camp Counselor” in their minds quite easily; whistle, dolphin shorts, running away from Jason Vorhees mom, but in reality, a camp counselor looks just like you! Camp Morty’s counselors come from as close as Westchester County, New York, to as far South Africa. Our counselors are motivated team players with a ton of skills and character. Camp Morty is a free residential summer camp for Westchester County children ages 8-17 that are receiving services through the Department of Social Services. Our General Counselors are role models that are responsible for ensuring a safe and fun camp experience for all campers. They also assist with the facilitation of daily activities, attend trainings, and work with leadership to implement programming.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for care and supervision of a group of campers as they navigate the day-to-day at camp.
- Be an active member of the camp community by participating in all programming and activities including camp-wide events, hikes, ropes course, sports, talent shows, and village meetings.
- Explain and review the camp policies, traditions and rules with campers.
- Maintain daily camp reports on each camper to help evaluate their needs, goals, and progress during their camp experience. (Procedures for record-keeping will be covered in pre-camp orientation).
- Abide by all rules, regulations, and safety procedures as outlined in the staff manual.
- Assume responsibility for the use and care of camp equipment and facilities.
- Strive to work in a cooperative manner with fellow staff to achieve goals of the program.
- Understand that campers come first and decisions should be made in the best interest of campers.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent
- Experience working with teens, adolescents or children
- Experience writing lesson plans and teaching is a plus
- Knowledge of trauma-informed practices is a plus
- Experience working with underserved populations is a plus
- Background in camping/ orienteering is a plus
Training and Internship Opportunities
Camp Morty provides trauma-informed training and child mental health training to all counselors. Camp Morty provides opportunities for those who are looking for internship opportunities to receive supervision from a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, which can include performance review requirements.
This is a sleepaway camp, and the position requires on-site boarding for the duration of the summer.
