If you’re still deciding on a major or wanting to make a change, you’re not alone. According to a the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) “up to 75% of college students change their major at least once” during their educational journey as they learn more about their interests, strengths, and career goals. The good news is that you don’t need to have everything figured out right now!
The key is to take action and explore your options.
A great place to start is to learn more about yourself, and what you would like out of the work you will do. Using assessments like FOCUS 2, MCode, or the O*NET Interest Profiler you can identify your interests, values, skills, and motivations. This can help you develop a better understanding of majors and careers that would be a good fit for you, and what you hope to do!
Once you’ve completed an assessment, explore the What Can I Do With This Major? resource. This tool connects academic majors to career paths, industries, and job boards, helping you see the many possibilities available to you. Remember, a major is not a career. Majors equip you with valuable knowledge and skills, and each can lead to a variety of occupations and industries, so be sure you take time to discover!
Other ways to explore include:
- Completing a LinkedIn Learning course or Forage Job Simulation
- Joining a student organization on Engage BSU
- Taking a class in a subject that interests you
- Volunteering or participating in a micro-internship through Parker-Dewey
- Talking with professionals, faculty, or alumni in fields you’re considering

Another important step is to meet with your academic advisor to identify courses that can help you explore potential majors while staying on track academically.
