Career-Building Opportunities for Neurodivergent Students at BSU

Here at Bridgewater State University, we believe there’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to success.

If you’re a neurodivergent student—autistic, ADHD, dyslexic, or simply someone who thinks in unique ways—BSU offers a ton of opportunities to help you learn, grow, and launch your career with confidence.

Here are some of the best campus resources and activities designed to support how you study, build networks, gain practical experience, and build your future career:

1. The Academic Achievement Center (AAC)

Think of it as mission control for support. The AAC offers:

  • Learning and study strategy coaching
  • Accessible testing services
  • Tutoring and writing support
  • Assistive technology tools (text-to-speech, screen readers, and more)

Pro tip: AAC is not just for emergencies. It’s for students who want to work smarter from day one.

2. Disability Resources Office (DRO)

If you have a documented disability or need accommodations, this is your go-to. The DRO can help you with:

  • Extended test time
  • Reduced-distraction testing environments
  • Note-taking support
  • Faculty communication about accommodations

They’re friendly, confidential, and here to help you succeed without stress.

3. Academic Programs That Value Different Ways of Thinking

Majors like Psychology, Computer Science, Communication Studies, Special Education, and Art & Graphic Design often attract neurodivergent students who think analytically, visually, or empathetically. These programs welcome diverse perspectives and offer flexibility in how you learn and demonstrate your knowledge.

You can also check out certificates in Diversity & Social Justice or Disability Studies if you’re interested in advocacy and inclusion.

4. Neurodivergent Student Support Group

Offered through the Wellness Center, this peer group is a judgment-free space where students connect over shared experiences, challenges, and strategies. It’s relaxed, real, and full of “you get me” moments. Check with the Wellness Center for meeting times.

5. Extra-Curriculars Built for Your Brain

There are over 90 clubs at BSU—and several are especially great for neurodivergent students:

  • Gaming Club – strategy, socializing, and zero pressure
  • Anime Club – where passion is appreciated and fandom is celebrated
  • Art Club – visual thinkers, rejoice!
  • Creative Writing Club – ideal for students with vivid imaginations or unique storytelling styles
  • Don’t see what you need? You can start your own club with just a few signatures!

6. Career Services

We offer:

  • 1:1 career counseling that adapts to your communication style
  • Help with executive functioning (like breaking job searches into manageable steps)
  • Mock interviews, career assessments, and tools to spotlight your strengths

If your brain doesn’t work like everyone else’s—good. BSU isn’t here to “fix” you. We’re here to support you, challenge you, and help you thrive exactly as you are.
