Struggling to find the right words when talking to employers? Nervous about what to say to a recruiter at BSU’s Education Career Fair on May 7th?
You’re not alone! Approaching an employer can feel intimidating, but with the right preparation, you can make a strong first impression.
One of the best ways to confidently introduce yourself is by preparing an elevator pitch!
What is an Elevator Pitch and Why Is It Important?
An elevator pitch (or pitch speech) is a brief introduction about yourself and the types of positions you are interested in. It typically lasts 30 to 60 seconds—just enough time to make an impact while keeping the conversation natural.

Having a well-crafted pitch will:
- Boost your confidence when approaching recruiters
- Help you stand out in a competitive job fair environment
- Showcase your skills and interests clearly and concisely
How to Structure Your Elevator Pitch
When creating your elevator pitch, ask yourself:
- Who am I? (Name, major, relevant experience)
- What can I offer? (Key skills, strengths, or experiences)
- What careers am I interested in? (Job roles, industries, or companies)
Example Elevator Pitch:
“Hi, I’m Devon Brown. I’m a management major here at Bridgewater State University and will be graduating next month. Currently, I’m employed as a shift leader at McDonald’s, managing six people during my shift while working 30 hours a week and attending school full-time. In addition, this past fall, I interned in the customer service division of Ocean Spray, providing online support to customers and learning supervisory skills. I’m interested in building a career as a manager in the corporate world or in government.”
Final Tips:
- Practice your pitch beforehand so it feels natural, not rehearsed.
- Be confident and enthusiastic.
- Tailor your pitch based on the employer and the role you’re interested in.
