Why Transfer Students Should Visit Career Services in their First Semester

Remember your first day of college? You had to adjust to a new campus, new classes, new professors, new friends and more. Everything was new. Now think about doing that day all over again at a completely new university where everyone else seems to already know their way around. This might sound like your experience as a transfer student. It’s no surprise that transfer students face unique challenges compared to first-time freshmen. Maybe you’ve declared your major at BSU and registered for classes but that’s about it. How will you find your sense of direction as a new transfer student? There are many support services at BSU, and we want Career Services & Internships to be at the top of your list.

We recommend transfer students visit the Career Services & Internships office in their first semester for several reasons. To start, we are a friendly and welcoming office that would love to meet you! While our focus is on careers and internships, we have strong connections across campus and can likely send you in the right direction for any other questions you may have. From there, we have a lot to offer in terms of helping you design your career and life while at BSU and beyond. Our team of Career Advisors are here to help you explore your values, interests, personality, and skills so you can start thinking about potential career paths. We have a host of online resources including FOCUS 2, What Can I Do With This Major, and TruMotivate that will help you identify which career paths are a good fit for you. Once you have some ideas in mind, we can connect you to opportunities to test out these career paths through networking events, employer info sessions, internships, job simulations, and more. Handshake is one of our top tools to connect you to thousands of internship and job postings for college students. This is also where you can register for any of our upcoming events including workshops, networking events, career fairs and more. You may also want to explore one of our Signature Internship Programs like Semester in the City, Virtual Internships, or Parker Dewey. When you meet with a Career Advisor, they will offer customized recommendations for different opportunities that would be helpful for you to explore during your career journey.

The opportunities are plentiful when you utilize BSU’s Career Services & Internships office. But don’t just take it from me. Ask your classmates about their experience, like Himanshu Singh, computer science student who said: “My experience with Career Services and Internships has always been positive and helpful. I visited the office during my first semester for help with my resume and cover letter. From this first meeting, I secured a fulfilling on-campus job as a transfer ambassador. This past spring, I attended the Career Services and Internships’ Job & Internship Fair which helped me land a summer internship with the Light Foundation in Sharon, MA. I also took advantage of mock interviewing through the office which taught me how to communicate effectively in a high-pressure environment while displaying my high value skills. I highly recommend all BSU students utilize the Career Services & Internships office to gain valuable skills and opportunities, grow professionally, and become the best version of themselves.”

We hope to meet you soon. Schedule an appointment today!
