Finding and Applying for an On-Campus Job

What if you could walk 10 minutes from your class to your job?

You could, if you worked at BSU!  There are many offices on campus that seek undergraduates to support our campus.  As I write this blog posting mid-summer, there are already 100+ jobs posted including peer tutors, office ambassadors, event planners, tour guides, lab monitors, office assistants, fitness instructors, and van drivers.  When this is posted in September, I know there will be even more opportunities listed.

Most supervisors are eager to train you and you will also find that there are both work study and non-work study options.   I have met many students who gained valuable skills – verbal and written communication, professional presence, critical thinking – in student employment that helped launch their careers after graduation.

So – now that you know about this option – here’s the steps you can take to apply:

  1. Go to the BSU’s jobs site.  Explore and make a list of all the opportunities that interest you.
  1. To apply you need a resume and cover letter.   Schedule an appointment using Handshake with an advisor in the Career Services and Internship Office, for assistance with these materials.  You can also call the office at 508-531-1328.
  1. While waiting for your appointment, go to this webpage and you will find guides for both resumes and cover letters and great samples.  This page should help you build drafts of both.
  1. Share those drafts with your career advisor during your appointment.
  1. Return to BSU’s job site and apply for any and all jobs that interest you.
  1. If you get called for an interview, you can prepare using Big Interview, a virtual interview prep platform and/or schedule a practice interview, once again using Handshake to arrange a meeting, with a career advisor.

Happy student job hunting!
