While searching for a job or internship, pay attention to the process and how your application materials are being received. It’s very easy to externalize issues in the job search and attribute struggles to the job market, interviewers, and the competition. Here are some of the common issues we hear from job seekers and tips on how to address these challenges:
1) I have sent out tons of applications but am not hearing back from any companies.
It’s vital to engage with a career advisor at BSU to review all your materials (resume, cover letters, writing samples, etc.) and discuss your search process. Remember to tailor your application materials for each position and proofread them before submission. Equally important is networking with industry professionals. Schedule career conversation sessions to build these valuable connections.
2) I am getting first interviews but never hear back after that initial meeting.
Practice your interview responses throughout the process and take notes. What did the employer ask you during the first round of interviews? Take notes of these questions and practice your interview response. Review our interview tips online and utilize Big Interview to practice! You can also schedule a mock interview session with a career advisor at BSU to gather additional feedback to work on interviewing skills.
3) I am consistently making it to the final round of interviews but have not received a single job offer.
There could be a variety of reasons why you are not receiving a call to schedule an interview, some of which are out of your control. Sometimes an employer will opt not to fill an open position. An employer may already have an internal candidate in mind for the position but are legally required to post the position. Other candidates that are applying may simply have more experience or are overly qualified. Schedule a mock interview or career advising session so we can help you unpack this process. Explain your issue, bring a job description and company information of the last place where this occurred during your advising session, and have the career advisor conduct a mock interview session. While this is frustrating, try not to take it personally and stay positive during this journey. Look to the things you can take charge of that can create more tremendous success in your process.
